Egon Schiele – the necrophiliac scrapbook

Looking at a series of Schiele’s work you cannot help but be drawn into his seductive use of line. It  is almost cartoon like drawn like an outline but with some sensitivity that makes it both sensuous and erotic. The poses are grotesque , ugly even, the colors are rotten decomposing sickly versions of nature. But it really doesnt matter because all of these elements are drawn together through the draftsmanship of the line.

The erotiscism is disturbing and challenges you. You are drawn to the obvious sexiness of some of the imagery but there is an unclean aftertaste that lingers. He seduces you in but then makes you feel you have made love to a corpse.

There is an almost precient aspect to his work, as though he could see his future. The figures are deathly and sickly looking. Gaunt elongated and malnourished they are a fortaste of images to come from concentration camps in the next great war.
